OSRS Slayer Guide: How to Complete Your Pyrefiend Task Efficiently

If you’ve been assigned a Pyrefiend Slayer task and you're not sure whether to complete it or skip it, this guide is for you. Pyrefiends may not be the most exciting creatures in Old School RuneScape, but with the right setup, they’re quick, safe, and decent Slayer XP-especially for lower levels. While they don’t drop much valuable loot, if you’re looking to speed up your progress or fund your gear, some players choose to buy OSRS gold to make the grind more efficient.

Where to Find Pyrefiends

Pyrefiends are fairly easy to locate and appear in multiple places throughout Gielinor. The best and most efficient location is the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon, which is found just north of Rellekka. If you have a Slayer ring, you can teleport directly to the entrance and be fighting Pyrefiends within a minute. Once inside, simply run past the first two sets of monsters and you’ll find the Pyrefiends.

Other locations include the Asgarnian Ice Dungeon, near Port Sarim, and the God Wars Dungeon. However, these alternatives are less convenient. The Asgarnian location is further from banks and teleport spots, and the God Wars Dungeon is overkill for a basic Slayer task. Stick with the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon unless you have a specific reason not to.

Combat Information and Best Setup

Pyrefiends are level 43 and have about 45 Hitpoints. They attack exclusively with Magic, which means you can either tank their attacks or protect yourself using prayers. Their magic attacks can splash frequently, and while they aren’t extremely dangerous, they can chip away at your health if you're not careful-especially for lower-level players.

If you're using Protect from Magic, it's smart to learn prayer flicking to conserve prayer points. To flick, simply turn the prayer on just before the Pyrefiend's attack lands, then turn it off immediately. This technique drastically reduces your prayer drain while keeping you safe.

The most efficient way to kill Pyrefiends is by using Ranged. In the Fremennik dungeon, there are perfect safe spots near rubble where you can aggro them and attack from a distance. Magic is also effective but generally slower. Melee works, but you'll likely take damage and need to bring food-unless you're high level and can kill them quickly.

Can You Use a Cannon?

Unfortunately, no. You cannot use a Dwarf multicannon inside the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon. This is disappointing, especially since the monsters are tightly packed, which would make cannoning highly effective. Still, the task is manageable without it, and the safe spots make it easy to avoid taking damage.

What Do Pyrefiends Drop?

Here’s the bad news: Pyrefiends don’t drop anything particularly valuable. Their loot table is full of minor items like fire runes, chaos runes, mithril chainbodies, fire staffs, and various low-tier gear. While they’re not as bad as ghouls-which literally drop only bones-they still aren’t going to make you any significant profit.

If you’re looking to make money from Slayer, Pyrefiends aren’t the answer. But if you just want a task you can breeze through for some XP, they’re not a terrible option.

Should You Do or Skip This Task?

Whether you should do the Pyrefiend task depends largely on your current Slayer level and your goals.

If you’re still under level 60 Slayer, it’s generally worth doing. Early Slayer levels are slow, and tasks like this provide safe, consistent XP with little risk. Even if the drops are bad, the point is to level up-not to make gold.

Once you’re above level 70 and have access to better tasks, it’s understandable if you choose to skip it. At that point, your time might be better spent on tasks with stronger XP rates or profitable loot. But even then, it’s worth doing once to learn how it works.

Final Thoughts

Pyrefiends are one of those mid-tier Slayer tasks that players often overlook. They’re not exciting, and they don’t drop much, but they’re fast, safe, and great for training Slayer early on. Plus, with the ability to safe-spot them using Ranged, you can make it a low-effort task while doing other things. If you’re new to Slayer, it’s worth giving every task a try at least once. You might end up liking it, even if it’s not meta. Not every task has to be optimal-sometimes, it’s about what feels good to grind. For players who want to supplement their progress, purchasing cheap RS gold can help fund better gear or supplies to make the grind smoother. So bring your bow, practice your flicks, get your XP, and keep moving toward level 99. Good luck out there, and don’t let a Pyrefiend be the reason you teleport out embarrassed!
